Canadian expat reveals strange Australian cafe toilet discovery

A Canadian woman living in Australia has discovered something “absolutely nuts” about Aussie toilets – with fellow expats agreeing.

Brooklynn, who is based in Brisbane, took to TikTok to share the two “wild” things she’s come across since moving Down Under.

But before she continued, the expat wanted to make it clear how much she loved Australia, describing it as “the most amazing place to live ever”.

“I’m a Canadian living in Australia and there are two things that I think are absolutely nuts about this place,” she began.

“Some people may not think this first thing is that big of a deal but I personally think that it’s wild,” she went on.

“Cafes and restaurants don’t have bathrooms.”

She was shocked some places didn’t have toilets and how a key was required to use a common bathroom usually located around the corner.

“You go for a coffee in the morning and you have your coffee and subsequently you have to go to the bathroom,” she said.

“They may or may not have access to a bathroom in the general area, so they give you a key with a giant spoon on it.

“And then you have to walk a million miles and there might be like a shared, tiny little bathroom that’s neglected and kind of dirty that you have to do your business in.”

She said coming from Canada, “that’s odd”.

The other “wild” thing she noted was how “gorgeous” the women are in Australia.

However, it was the expat’s comment about the toilets that left Aussies baffled.

“Girl which Australia are you in? I’ve never eaten anywhere that does not have a toilet,” one local wrote.

“All us Aussies have no clue what you’re talking about with the bathroom thing,” wrote another.

A third added: “I’ve lived in Melbourne my whole life and I’ve never experienced the bathroom thing.”

Some Aussies pointed out while it can be the case at some cafes, it is “rare”.

Meanwhile, fellow expats agreed with her, saying they still can’t come to terms with it.

“Haha. I’m from England. Been in Australia 17 years and still not adjusted to the giant spoon and key! Any cafe with a proper toilet gets extra points,” one person wrote.

“So true! I’m in Sydney and moved from California. I still struggle with this. It’s also hard when you have young kids and they need to go to the bathroom,” said another.
