Donald Trump has announced he expects to be arrested in the coming days and has called on the nation to protest in support of him.
The former United States president posted to social media on Saturday revealing he was expecteing to be arrested on Tuesday in connection to an investigation by the Manhattan District Attorney.
“Illegal leaks from a corruptand highly political Manhattan district attorney’s office … indicate that, with no crime being able to be proven … the far and away leading Republican candidate and former president of the United States of America, will be arrested on Tuesday of next week,” Mr Trump wrote to the social media site Truth Social.
“Protest, take our nation back,” he said.
His suspicion relates to evidence presented earlier this year to a grand jury by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office.
The grand jury was in the process of investigating an almost A$200,000 (USD$130,000) payment made by Michael Cohen, Trump’s former personal lawyer and fixer, to porn star Stormy Daniels.
The payment was allegedly made during Mr Trump’s 2016 campaign.
Ms Daniels claimed she had an affair with Mr Trump a decade earlier, which the former president has denied happening.
Mr Trump, who held office from 2017 to 2021, has remained adament on a return to being the country’s president in 2024.
